Converting PPM to percent
When concentrations get large enough, ppm becomes unwieldy and percent is clearer. The crossover point is typically around a few thousand ppm — saying “25,000 ppm” is less intuitive than “2.5%” for most audiences.
The conversion is fixed and simple: divide by 10,000. This works because percent means “per hundred” and ppm means “per million,” and 1,000,000 ÷ 100 = 10,000.
How to Convert PPM to Percent (step by step)
Step One: Divide by 10,000
percent = ppm ÷ 10,000
For 5,000 ppm: 5,000 ÷ 10,000 = 0.5%.
Why this works
“Per million” and “per hundred” differ by a factor of 10,000. So 10,000 ppm = 1%, 1 ppm = 0.0001%, and any value in between scales proportionally.
