PPB to PPM Converter

Enter a value in parts per billion to convert it to parts per million. 1,000 ppb equals 1 ppm.

PPB and PPM: scale matters

Parts per billion and parts per million describe the same type of measurement at different scales. PPM is parts per million (10⁶); ppb is parts per billion (10⁹). The conversion is simply dividing by 1,000.

PPB is used when concentrations are so low that ppm values would be inconveniently small decimals. Environmental regulations for heavy metals, pesticide residues, and pharmaceutical impurities often specify limits in ppb because the relevant concentrations are in the single-digit to hundreds range on that scale.

How to Convert PPB to PPM (step by step)

Step One: Divide by 1,000

ppm = ppb ÷ 1,000

For 5,000 ppb: 5,000 ÷ 1,000 = 5.000 ppm.

Why this works

One ppm is one part in 1,000,000. One ppb is one part in 1,000,000,000. The ratio is 1,000,000,000 ÷ 1,000,000 = 1,000. So it takes 1,000 ppb to make 1 ppm.

About the formula: PPM = PPB ÷ 1,000. There are 1,000 ppb in every ppm.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the relationship between ppb and ppm?+

1 ppm = 1,000 ppb. PPB is a finer resolution than ppm, used for extremely small concentrations like trace contaminants in drinking water.

When is ppb used instead of ppm?+

PPB is common in environmental monitoring for toxic substances where even tiny amounts matter — like lead in drinking water (action level is 15 ppb) or mercury in fish tissue.

Is ppb the same as µg/L?+

For aqueous solutions with density close to 1 g/mL, yes — 1 ppb ≈ 1 µg/L. For other solvents, you'd need to account for density differences.
