PPM in context

PPM is the most common unit for trace concentrations, but it’s not the only one. Depending on your field, you might need the same value expressed as a percentage (environmental reporting), ppb (toxicology), mg/kg (food science), or mg/L (water treatment). This converter shows all equivalent representations at once.

The relationships are fixed: ppm, mg/kg, and µg/g are always numerically identical. mg/L equals ppm only for water. Percent is always ppm ÷ 10,000. PPB is always ppm × 1,000. Once you know one, you know them all.

How to Convert PPM (step by step)

Step One: To percent, divide by 10,000

percent = ppm ÷ 10,000

For 250 ppm: 250 ÷ 10,000 = 0.025%.

Step Two: To ppb, multiply by 1,000

ppb = ppm × 1,000

For 250 ppm: 250 × 1,000 = 250,000 ppb.

Step Three: To mg/kg or µg/g, use the same number

mg/kg = ppm (they’re identical by definition)

For 250 ppm: 250 mg/kg = 250 µg/g.

About the formula: 1 ppm = 0.0001% = 1,000 ppb = 1 mg/kg = 1 mg/L (water) = 1 µg/g.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert ppm to percent?+

Divide by 10,000. For example, 250 ppm = 250 ÷ 10,000 = 0.025%.

Is ppm the same as mg/kg?+

Yes, exactly. 1 ppm is by definition 1 part per million parts, which is the same as 1 mg per 1,000,000 mg (= 1 kg). They're interchangeable.

Why are mg/L and mg/kg listed separately?+

mg/kg is a mass/mass ratio and always equals ppm. mg/L is mass/volume and only equals ppm when the solution density is 1 g/mL (i.e., water). For other liquids, they differ.
