PPM to mg/L: when density matters
PPM and mg/L are used almost interchangeably in water science, but they’re technically different measurements. PPM is mass per mass (mg per kg of solution), while mg/L is mass per volume (mg per liter of solution). They only equal each other when 1 liter of solution weighs exactly 1 kg — i.e., when density is 1 g/mL.
For pure water, this is close enough. But for brines, oils, concentrated acids, or any non-aqueous liquid, the density correction matters and skipping it introduces real error.
How to Convert PPM to mg/L (step by step)
Step One: Find the solution density
Look up or measure the density of your solution in g/mL.
For water: density = 1.000 g/mL. For seawater: ≈ 1.025 g/mL.
Step Two: Multiply ppm by density
mg/L = ppm × density (g/mL)
For 500 ppm in water: 500 × 1.000 = 500 mg/L. For 500 ppm in seawater: 500 × 1.025 = 512.5 mg/L.
