Every piece of electrical equipment deals with two types of power in AC circuits: apparent power (measured in volt-amps) and real power (measured in watts). The distinction matters because your UPS, generator, or transformer is rated in VA, but the actual work your devices consume is measured in watts. The power factor bridges the gap between these two values. In a purely resistive load like an incandescent bulb, VA and watts are identical (power factor of 1). But inductive loads like motors, fluorescent lighting, and computer power supplies draw current that is out of phase with voltage, making the apparent power higher than the real power consumed.

A common mistake is assuming that a 1000 VA UPS can deliver 1000 watts. In reality, most UPS units have a power factor of 0.6 to 0.8, meaning that 1000 VA unit actually delivers only 600 to 800 watts of usable power. Always check both ratings before plugging in your equipment.

How to Calculate Watts from VA (Step by Step)

Step 1: Identify the Apparent Power (VA)

Find the VA rating on your device’s nameplate, UPS label, or transformer specification sheet. This is the total apparent power the source provides.

Step 2: Determine the Power Factor

Look up the power factor for your load. It will be a decimal between 0 and 1. If unknown, 0.8 is a safe general estimate for mixed residential/office loads.

Step 3: Calculate Real Power in Watts

Multiply the apparent power by the power factor to get the real power your equipment actually delivers or consumes.
