Horsepower to Amps Calculator: What It Measures
Estimate motor current from horsepower and system conditions. This calculator uses the displayed units and keeps the calculation transparent so you can check the result against a nameplate, battery specification, or electrical design estimate. It is useful for sizing equipment, comparing energy ratings, and translating between common electrical quantities.
How to Calculate Horsepower to Amps Calculator
Step One: Convert horsepower to watts
Start with the first relationship in the calculation.
watts = horsepower × 746
Using the calculator’s default values:
5 × 746 = 3,730 W
Step Two: Divide by system factors
Apply the unit conversion or electrical factor needed for the final result.
amps = hp × 746 × 100 ÷ (phase factor × voltage × PF × efficiency)
Using the same example:
5 × 746 × 100 ÷ (1 × 240 × 0.8 × 90) = 21.59 A
Important Assumptions
Use the correct nominal voltage, phase arrangement, power factor, resistance, time period, and efficiency for the equipment being evaluated. The result is an estimate for planning and education, not a substitute for manufacturer data, local electrical code, or a qualified electrician.
